On the back of the news last week, let’s talk Formula One.
Truth is, it ain’t my thing.
78 laps is about 75 too many in my book.
However…
I do have a dirty little soft spot for ‘Drive to Survive.’
The Formula One documentary series on Netflix.
My favourite person?
Christian Horner.
The top dog at Red Bull Racing.
He’s Emma’s favourite too.
Nothing to do with racing, and everything to do with the fact he married a Spice Girl.
Now I don’t know if you’ve watched the show…
… But Christian is like a snappy Jack Russell.
.Relentlessly stirring the pot.
.Relentlessly yapping at the adjudicators
.Relentlessly loyal to his team.
And over the last few years, he and his team have been on a winning streak.
Thanks in part to the mystical powers of Max Verstappen.
And here’s where its gets really interesting and really instructive.
See for eight years straight…
Christian lost.
To Mercedes.
Again. And again… And again.
.Drivers left.
.Engineers left.
.Owners wanted out.
Safe to say, morale was in the schitt’er.
How did he turn it around?
Simple.
In his words:
“I had two choices with the engine. The safe option was to stay with what I knew. The other option was to burn it to the ground and go with something new.”
He took the second choice.
Interestingly, the famous Ferrari stuck to their guns and stayed with what they knew.
… And despite their heritage, they’re still overspending and under-delivering.
Which is a B-I-G lesson for men like you and I…
See, when you are the boss, it’s far too easy to get comfy and stay stuck…
Arsehole thinking that normally goes along the lines of:
… “But this is the way I’ve always done it.’
… “But that won’t work here.”
… “But my business is different.”
The point being this.
If you’re stuck and standing still right now – is it time to burn schitt to the ground and go with a new approach?
Chances are, it could be the one thing that separates the reason from the madness.
