Are you playing Russian Roulette with your livelihood?

My leaky downstairs loo finally gave up the ghost and there was only one thing for it…

Call ‘Tricky Ricky.”

The local handyman and the individual responsible for saving my bacon when stuff breaks at home.

Truth is, when it comes to work, Ricky doesn’t do too much…

He doesn’t fit new bathrooms, doesn’t fit new boilers, doesn’t do ensuites.

He fixes leaks.

One time I asked, “Why only leaks Rick?”

“I’m a one-man-band mate. I want easy work, good money, and to get home for dinner with the missus.”

And this my friend you should find very instructive. …

See, traditionally, there are only two ways to operate a business.

First up, the often overlooked one-man-band.

There are good things about this model.

Just like Ricky, if you run ‘em right they are simple.

And with minimal employees, profit margins are usually good.

Now the flip side of this is that capacity is low, so plateaus come quick.

Plus they are totally reliant on the ‘one man’ of the band.

This means long holidays and sickness could leave you without a business to come back to.

(A dangerous game of Russian Roulette that puts your livelihood at stake.)

Which brings me to the other type of business, the much more desired multi-man-band.

Deep down a lot of men want this kind of business.

They want the employees.

They want the status.

After all, more employees means more money… right?

Wrong.

Truth is, it’s only once you’ve been around the block you realise that employees usually mean more headaches and less profit.

Sure the turnover may get a bump, but employees, well, they eat profit ( and your sanity) for breakfast.

The sad fact of the matter is this.

Far too many good men often confess they’re paying employees more than they pay themselves.

Made worse by the fact that every employee adds another layer of complexity and chaos.

And if history has taught me anything it’s that complexity and chaos kills scale – quickly.

The point being…

If scale and freedom are the name of the game – neither model will get you what you want.

You need another way.
