What’s the difference? And why it matters. Especially when you run a business…
See last weekend I went for a run with my son.
We’re at the start line for Parkrun (5km) together.
“Dad, I reallllllllllly wanna do a sub-ten.”
Now, he’s not superhuman…
What he wanted was to run the last 2km in under 10 minutes.
Knowing his fitness level, if he got his skates on, he could do it.
So my response
“Ok, let’s do it!”
Now, I could replay the whole run to you…
But I’ll save you the pain.
The whole affair could be deemed ‘light jogging with a side of whinging.’
There was moaning about shoe laces, whinging about the hill, complaining about ‘the hot.’
And even though he had jogged his way through, my son seemed shocked his time was way off.
On the walk back we talked about desire and ambition.
Desire is really wanting something.
Ambition is really wanting something and knowing it will take hard work to get there.
And it is very easy to get stuck in the first lane.
…I want a fast lap… I want a faster car… I want a bigger war chest…
Without committing to take the action to get there.
Next week our run rolls around and he’s quiet.
I didn’t realise he was going for it until…
Z-O-O-M!
At the last 2km marker he was off.
Panting, pushing and leaving me in his dust.
At the finish line, he collapsed into a sweaty heap.
Ultimately the time didn’t matter, the effort was there.
But he was a dog with two dycks when I gave him the news – 9.49.
Once he could drag his arse off the ground, we slowly walked back.
“I was more ambitious this week Dad.”
Quite.
Until next time.
