It’s Saturday morning and it’s raining…
Drizzling in fact.
You know the kind of rain.
The stuff that doesn’t look too bad, but stand in it for more than a second, and you’re drenched to the bone.
… But as a wise man once said:
“If you want to see a rainbow, first you have to see the rain…”
… So me and Barney still chose to do our 5K Park Run.
Where despite the rain, there are all sorts.
Ages five to 95.
And amongst the crowds, well, there are a few of a ‘special’ breed…
You know the type…
Fiddling with their chest-mounted heart rate monitors.
Farting about with pacers and smartwatches.
Fannying with their over-the-top water bottles and camel packs.
Barney and me?
We’re in shorts, t-shirts and a pair of trainers.
That’s it.
So the starter hits his bell and…. BOOM we’re off….
Two loops of Beacon Park as fast as you can.
Now here’s where it gets interesting…
Because, during those two laps, Barney was reminded of a valuable lesson:
A smartwatch don’t make you Mo Farrah…
… Especially if during the week your main hobby is sitting on your arse and eating crisps.
Now, maybe…
Maybe if you’re in the professional running game the tech helps.
But for a Saturday run around the park?
It adds vanity.
It adds perplexity.
It adds complexity.
All of which, in my experience slow you down instead of speeding you up.
Same goes for this game.
You don’t need bells and whistles.
You don’t need offices and employees.
You don’t need to look the part in front of people and peers.
All you need is a simple process to get you where you want – in the fastest way possible.
Anything that takes you away from that goal and that target?
Well, my friend, it’s just bloat and bullshyt.
All it does is weigh you down….
Mentally, physically, and financially.
So this week kill the clutter and keep it simple.
Chances are you’ll go further and faster.
