A hard lesson on competition…
And how it can screw us all in this game.
But first, Paris 2024.
A true showing of “Faster, Higher, Stronger.”
From the bona fide celebrities like Biles and Marchant.
To the under the radar Olympians, sweating it out without the glamour, or the big name sponsors.
(Including one gold medalist from my tiny town.)
After the pandemic riddled Tokyo, these games have been refreshing.
And inside was one race that was a true insight for men in this game…
Kerr vs Ingebrigtsen.
Two excellent athletes.
Two fierce competitors.
Two men obsessed with beating each other.
Who would take the ultimate crown?
There was smack talk, there was back chat, and I’m guessing there was some serious race strategy.
Here’s how it played out…
The gun goes…
Ingebrigtsen was quick out the blocks to push a brutal early pace.
Moments later Kerr went with him and caught up for the two-horse race.
Close to the last corner and in an effort to block Kerr, Ingebrigtsen pushed out to lane two.
And this was their fatal mistake…
They left a slither of space in lane one.
…Just wide enough for Hocker to slip through.
Down the inside track, he thundered.
And gold was his.
Hocker commented after the race:
“I ran my own race.”
And that is a hard thing to do in this game.
See, in life it is very difficult to get obsessed with competition.
Keeping up with the Jones, personally and professionally.
What are they doing? What have they got? Where are they going?
Yet, I would argue that you always run a better race when you put the blinkers on and go.
Focus on you.
What do Y-O-U want?
What do Y-O-U need?
What are Y-O-U going to do?
That way not only will you enjoy the race a hell of a lot more as you are fulfilling your needs and wants.
…Chances are, you’ll come home with the crown too.
