The other week my son lost…
He auditioned for the main part in the school production.
And he didn’t get it.
He was gutted and acted so.
Emma’s view?
“When he’s like this he reminds me of you.”
Fair enough.
As Billy Beane said:
“I hate losing more than I love winning… and there’s a difference.”
The pain of losing burns deeper than the high of winning.
Sure, that high will float my boat for a day.
But the pain of a loss?
You feel it deeper.
You remember it longer.
That shyt stains your soul.
Trouble is, as you get older, hating losing can hold you back, especially once you get comfortable.
And it becomes far too easy to let the fear of losing control you…
To let the fear of loss (and the pain that comes with it) stop you from doing things.
Trouble is, that mentality keeps you rooted in the same place.
It keeps you stuck and standing still.
And the truth is that if you stay on the sidelines, you won’t lose.
But you damn sure won’t win either.
Now luckily, kids are comfortable with getting uncomfortable.
Barney’s outlook once the dust had settled?
“I’ll audition at Christmas.”
That’s my boy.
So today, I urge you…
Embrace losing.
Let the fire of past losses fire you up.
It’s time to move forward and get uncomfortable.
Until next time.
Make More. Provide More. Be More.
