How to make them pay you more…

Back when I was starting out I had a mentor, Igor…

He was born in the Eastern block and embodied a cold, hard spirit.

We crossed paths at my all-time low.

When I had finally reached breaking point…

I was overwhelmed

I was underpaid.

I was feeling like a failure.

So I sucked it up and sought his help.

Which BTW was a big investment.

Yet under his guidance, that investment changed my game and changed my life…

Twelve years on, there’s still one thing he said that still sticks out like a sore thumb.

One thing that had a huge impact on me, financially and mentally.

One thing that boiled down to this:

“Charlie, stop being a pyssy. Double your prices.”

Sounds simple I know.

After all raising prices always increases profits.

It ain’t rocket science.

Yet most (me included at the time) are scared to do it…

Arsehole thinking 101 and a train of thought that usually goes like this:

… But I need to stay competitive…

… But I only win the work because of the price…

… But my customers will never pay that.

So rather than deciding to do it – you shoulder the burden instead of risking the fallout.

Needless to say I bit the bullet and did what needed to be done.

Igor backed me into a corner and pretty much held a gun to my head.

And I’m glad he did.

… Because the world didn’t end and only one customer left.

The rest just smiled, toed the line and kept paying.

Which brings me to the point of this email today.

When did you last raise your prices?

What would an extra 5%, 10% even 20% do for your bottom line?

What difference would that make for your life?

To your family’s life?

And I get it.

It goes against your gut.

… But you know it makes sense.

Truth is, if you’re not raising your prices, at least three times a year, I can guarantee you that you will be losing money and standing still.

So do it.

Sooner rather than later.

The New Year might be a good place to start.
