On Tuesday my son, Barney, turned ten.
… And it seems these days being ten years old is pretty damn good.
Now, for his birthday he had an aqua scramble party with his mates.
Think, bright green floating assault course – in a swimming pool.
In other words, a license to go wild…
And wild they went.
I’ll be honest, 27 ten-year-olds going for it is a thing to behold.
It’s like Lord Of The Flies.
The noise was monstrous.
The racing was serious.
And the excitement was infectious.
Everything was at full pelt and full volume.
Needless to say, I wanted in on the action too.
… But from the off, I didn’t stand a chance.
“Come on Barney’s Dad lets gooooooooo!”
“Barney’s Dad throw me off the top of that!”
“Let’s throw Barney’s Dad off the top of that!”
As you can imagine, when the time was up and I had to drag them out of the water, the only thing that got them moving was the promise of pizza and a questionable Spotify playlist.
On the back of the carnage, here’s what’s instructive about all of this…
Kids know how to find a tribe…
Kids know how to laugh at themselves…
… And kids know how to maximize the fun in everything.
Something I’d have you consider that most of us could do with working on this week.
The good news?
They all survived with only minor self-inflicted injuries.
The bad news?
It’s clear as day that I ain’t as young (or as much fun) as I once was.
Until next year.
Make More. Provide More. Be More.
