Had a ‘fun’ interaction at a festive do last week….
And when I say fun, I mean unbearable.
An interaction that I suspect you may have had too.
My wife had dragged me to a party against my will.
She had promised good food and ‘two hours tops.’
Well, she didn’t lie about the food.
I eyed up that beef brisket from across the room.
So there I was, attempting to pile my plate full when an acquaintance saddled up to me…
Time for some idle party chit-chat.
After the usual pleasantries, this was thrown out…
“Heard you are going skiing at Christmas. Again. Lucky! Must be nice for some.”
Ahhh… ‘lucky.’
Perhaps the most British way of sharing that under-the-collar level jealousy.
Now, I could have gotten into ‘luck’ with this corporate worker bee but there is little point.
Truth is they have no idea about our world.
The hours, the risks, the sacrifices.
The graft of building something from nothing.
The struggle of keeping it growing and providing.
Plus, we don’t get a boss doling out Christmas bonuses, holidays, or freebie parties.
So my personal rule in this game?
If it’s been a good year, have a good Christmas.
Lucky jibes be damned.
Now the reward is up to you.
I get that throwing yourself down a freezing snowy mountain is a thing of torture to many.
But whatever the reward is…
Spoil your wife. Spoil your kids. Spoil yourself.
In this game, you’ve got to reward yourself.
Because come the new year?
We go again.
And the opportunity for reward is missed.
Time to enjoy your ‘luck.’
Time to reward yourself.
