Last week was a big one for Barney, my son…
He went for Shuffle Day at his new school.
And he turned 11.
Next to some of the strapping sixth-formers he looked like a newborn.
Choosing a school has been interesting…
Some could be described as uninspiring at best.
Lucky for Barney, his new school ticked all his boxes…
Good snacks.
Now, as a parent, the choice was more considered.
In the end, this school won out, and in no small part that was due to the excellent Head Teacher.
When Barney went for his day there, she gave a great speech.
One that I’ll paraphrase for you in a minute.
Because it reminded me of a rule in life… one that applies heavily to men in this game.
See doing something new, growing, and evolving… inevitably means change.
Yet change can be hard.
Especially when you run your own business and you’re used to being in charge and in control.
And so maybe consciously, or unconsciously, you avoid change.
You stay in your lane, whether you are happy or not.
Yet, here’s what my son’s new Head said about change:
“I know some of you might be feeling butterflies with this change.
Let those butterflies fly away now.
Change means opportunity.
Now is a time of opportunity.
Your opportunity.
The pupils that do best at this school grab the opportunities in front of them with both hands.
That will be you.
Do everything, try everything, get tired.
Seize the day.
Seize today.”
After that, she was gone, leading a bunch of fired-up kids roaring out of the hall.
Reality is, there are a bunch of opportunities surrounding you right now.
Personal, professional, and everything in between.
…. But you have to reach out and grab them.
It’s time to seize the day.
