Employees are worse than ever in 2024.
And costing more.
Whilst doing some digging for a consulting gig, I stumbled upon a survey from VoucherCloud and this was the headline:
“The average UK office worker is only productive for 2 hours and 53 minutes out of the working day.”
Here’s what their staff admitted to getting up to each day:
- Checking social media – 44 mins
- Reading news websites – 1 hour 5 minutes
- Discussing out-of-work activities with colleagues – 40 mins
- Making hot drinks – 17 mins
- Smoking breaks – 23 mins
- Messaging – 14 mins
- Eating snacks – 8 mins
- Making food – 7 mins
- Making calls to partner/ friends – 18 mins
- Searching for new jobs- 26 mins
Ouch.
Now, for most men in this game, this isn’t new.
Employees have always been costly.
Yet, it’s getting worse out there and with no real end in sight.
Thanks to the new dumb-dumb trend of ‘quiet quitting’…
And newly qualified employees demanding eye-watering salaries, despite having
zero experience…
And let’s not even dig into the ballooning cost of employees thanks to the current economic wasteland.
All of which makes pushing to £1M+ like trying to run a car with no engine, sure, you can push it down the road eventually…
But it’ll be long, slow and hurt like hell.
A frustrating reality when you have worked your backside off for years to build your business from the ground up.

Firstly, tolerating.
Tolerating the laziness and incompetence.
Tolerating the ridiculous wages and ridiculous demands.
Tolerating the destruction of your profit and sanity.

It’s how employees get away with biting the hand that feeds them.
Maybe they tolerate it because they still believe employees are the road to good money.
Or maybe they get their kicks bragging about having 13 profit-sucking vampires under their command.
Who knows. Yet there is another choice…
Kill the reliance on employees.
Dead.
And I get it, this sounds like pie in the sky to some.
