The Lazy Basturd At The Gym

Half way (almost) into January. How’s your fitness kick going?

Truth is, I’m pretty good at hitting the gym but only because I’m a lazy basturd.

Makes no sense, being lazy and consistently hitting the gym, but hear me out…

Human beings are naturally lazy.

Hunter-gathers are designed to save energy.

Trouble is, we’re now doing zilch hunting and gathering, and much more sitting on the sofa and getting Tesco to deliver the big shop.

Yet our natural lazy instincts remain.

So when things get hard and when there is friction, our chimp brains don’t like it.

We opt out.

And when you think about it, the friction of going to the gym is pretty high…

  • Deciding when to go.
  • Finding gym clothes.
  • Putting them on.
  • Finding shoes.
  • Putting them on.
  • Finding your keys.
  • Getting in your car.
  • Driving to the gym.
  • Finding a parking spot.
  • Deciding what exercise to do.
  • Doing it (again and again and again.)

And this makes it easy to opt out and quit.

My solution?

I go to a gym that’s a five-minute walk away.

I have multiple gym bags ready to go.

I go at the exact same time on the exact same days.

I follow a plan to the letter.

Very lazy.

Very low friction.

Meaning the chances of this habit sticking are way higher.

Same goes for business and making money.

If your goal is making more, ask yourself…

Am I making doing business with me as lazy as humanly possible?

Remove the friction and not only will sales come easier…

Chances are customers will stick around for longer too.

So my advice?

Be the lazy basturd and remove the friction.

Your profit will thank you for it.

Until next time.
