I’ve not liked this weekend.
We had an extended family gathering.
You know the sort…
People you don’t know, chit-chat you don’t like, a buffet you don’t touch.
Awful on every level.
Made worse by the fact that twelve minutes in I got trapped by a distant relative.
The crap chat ensued about kids, spouses and sports.
…Then the ‘work chat’ began.
Now, I always actively avoid ‘work’ talk.
In my experience, the employed never understand what we do, or why we do it.
Luckily this relative was a talker, not a listener…
“Yeah, I started a new job in London this month. It’s a nice benefits package, the office is swish, plus it is really (really) secure.”
Raising an eyebrow, I sloped off – quickly.
Of all the dumb fukcry I witnessed yesterday, this took the biscuit.
My problem with his statement?
One word.
Secure.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m no basement-dwelling conspiracy theorist.
But his world is no more secure than it was last month, last year or the last decade.
The delusion is believing “security” ever existed in the first place.
See, there is no security.
Never has been, never will be.
After all…
- Every New Yorker thought 9/11 was a normal Tuesday, till it wasn’t.
- Every banker thought subprime loans were a sure thing, till they weren’t.
- Every Brit thought the Post Office was a trustworthy institution, till it wasn’t.
Point being.
Everything can flip… at the drop of a hat… and in every aspect of your life.
Secure marriages, secure businesses, secure lives.
They can all go lame.
… And most will.
Meaning this.
There are two ways to take your mantra for money this week…
You can take it as ‘dark’ and end up living your life ruled by fear.
Or…
You can take it for what it is.
An understanding that they can outlaw what you do, change how you have to do it, and even select how to screw you over.
After all, markets shrink and die.
But whatever happens, you are far better off than most.
See, in this life, there is only one horse you can trust and back….
You.
Your skills.
Your knowledge… and your ability to make your own money.
It’s how when push comes to shove, you can fight any fire, weather any storm, rise from any ashes.
And it’s why today I’d urge you to remember YOU will always be the most secure thing that you have.
