If you’ve built your business from the ground up, chances are, this applies to you…
The small but complex paradox.
Now, I get it’s weird to think of a small business as complex.
Especially if you’re a one-man outfit, or only have a handful of employees.
Complex is for the corporate fat cats, not surveyors in Swindon, right?
And whilst I’m sure the fat cats are complex, I’d ask you to consider that your business is too.
Mine was.
And it nearly ruined me.
Back in the early 2000s, I built my web design business from the ground up.
From flyers in coffee shops to schmoozing big-wigs.
There was the familiar pattern… more projects… bigger jobs… fancier customers.
Once you’d done a good job and shown your worth, customers would always ask for more.
Extra add-ons like email, advertising and whatever.
And my answer was always ‘yes.’
More money is always better, right?
So, brick by brick, a new service was tagged on, a new contractor helped out and so on.
And it was only once things had been going this way for a while that the cracks started to appear…
There were more services to juggle.
There were more staff to handle.
There were more projects to keep on top of.
…And all this meant more headaches to deal with.
Surviving at the end of a customer’s leash, papering over the cracks, living in an endless exhausting juggle.
In the end, I nearly lost my marriage because of it.
And the painful reality was, despite turnover going higher and higher……
Once you started digging into the numbers….
Profit was pitiful for the work I was putting in.
I’d built a complex prison of my own making.
Ironic considering most get into this game for more money A-N-D more freedom.
In short, that realisation is how One Man Empire was born.
Minimal employees. Minimal overheads. Minimal complexity.
…Maximum profitability.
Simple enough, and chances are, it’s what you got into this game for in the first place.
