Turns Out The Karate Kid Was Wrong

Big news at my house…

My son (Barney) is going to compete in his first karate tournament.

With this news, Emma deemed it was finally time….

…finally, time for him to watch The Karate Kid.

Now, I have been waiting 10 years for this day.

So we watched it on the big screen and it lived up to every expectation.

…The music, the fighting, the 80s and the not giving a damn about offending anyone.

Since then, Cobra-Kai has been binge-watched too.

And over the 5 seasons, there’s been one thing that stood out.

… Something Mr. Miyagi said that hit a nerve:

“Daniel-san… must follow passion. Man who work for passion always richer than man who work for money.”

That man may have known karate, but he didn’t know money.

Because one sure thing that everyone who has ever struggled knows is this – being poor sucks.

The man who works for a pittance is unhappy, even if he loves what he does.

Why?

Because there is nothing more soul-destroying than feeling like you can not provide.

That shame and humiliation will kill any passion quicker than a crane kick to the face.

See in my experience, it’s false to believe that passion and money cannot go hand in hand.

You can have both.

Especially when you have built something of your own.

And I get it.

Maybe you started out loving what you do, but now you’re further down the road, tired and jaded.

Or maybe you like what you do but you feel like you’re not making what you deserve.

…Whichever side of the coin you are on, remember this:

In this game, you set your own rules.

You choose what happens in your business.

In this game, you can have both – passion and money.

I urge you, never to sacrifice either.

Until next time.
