Unsolicited Advice From A 10 Year Old

Barney (my son) made me feel old this week.

After karate practice, he came tearing up to me and said…

“Dad, Dad, I’ve been listening to this new band! They’re wicked!”

“Oh yeah?”

“The drumming is great, the lyrics are BADASS. You should listen to them.”

“Really?”

“Deffo. They’ve got this one awesome song it’s called ‘American Idiot’…”

…WTF?!

I nearly spat out my coffee.

“Barney, is this NEW band called Green Day?”

“Yes! Dad, they are sooooooo good….”

“Well, they sure are good son, but they ain’t new.”

I then proceeded to bore the pants off him by walking down memory lane…

A tall tale about the time me and Em saw Green Day at The Bowl in 2005.

Anyway, his unsolicited advice did serve as a useful and stark reminder…

In this game, it’s easy to get bored of your ‘core stuff’.

The stuff to you that is old hat.

You’ve heard it a thousand times.

You’ve sold it a thousand times.

You’ve done it a thousand times.

Yet, you would be wise to remember…

There is always new prospects coming into your market.

And chances are the best way to convert that new blood into new profitable customers is NOT the experimental third album.

It’s your classics.

Your bread and butter.

What you’ve done and delivered again and again and again.

So this week your mantra for money is simple:

Stick to your core.

Your back pocket will thank you for it.

Until next time.
