There was a van parked outside the office for three days last week. On the side of this van was a useful reminder….
Plastered across the back of the van was this:
“Heating. Plumbing. Pipework. Welding. Electrical. Security. CCTV.”
Might as well have written ‘Jack of all trades.’
This happens in all industries…
The marketing guy who does websites, emails and advertising.
The financial advisor going for anyone with a few quid in the bank.
The surveyor who covers buildings, and trees, and does property management on the side.
It’s easily done.
I did the same when starting out.
A customer asks, “Can you do this too?”
And the pound signs flash before your eyes.
Trouble is, this is a slippery slope.
And maybe you can be good at more than one thing.
But you can’t be K-N-O-W-N for more than one.
Not as a master anyway.
In my experience, the Jack of all trades stays stuck in this game.
Because complexity is the death of profit.
Trying to be all things to all men?
It’ll only leave you running in circles.
..Customers are too scattered.
..Tasks are too varied.
..Standards are too different.
Meaning you end up with a business that constantly leaks profit.
In the end, turnover might get a bump, but profit is pitiful.
Especially when you consider all the extra work you’re putting in.
If you want to push to £1M+ without an army of employees then simplicity is the key.
One specialisation is the key to rapid growth.
When you simplify and specialise in solving just one profitable problem, everything changes.
..You can standardise.
..You can optimise.
..You can finally scale.
