At the beginning of the school year, Barney (my son) got voted House Captain. A nice victory but since then, things have gone south.…
Turns out, his house is a bunch of losers.
Literally.
Since the start of the school year, they’ve won diddly squat.
Who knows why…
Maybe they can’t sit still.
Maybe they’re a bunch of reprobates.
Maybe they behave like a bunch of chimps on acid.
Either way, week after week was the same old story…
Barney and his Co-Captain Joanna had to watch on as another house won the weekly house points.
And this often resulted in a very disappointed walk home…
“Dad, we never win! It’s not fair!”
“If you want to win D-O something different. Moaning won’t change things.”
To start with nothing changed.
He tolerated the situation in the way most humans do…
A fair amount of complaining with very little action.
Until, in the end, something snapped.
He twigged that they might go a whole year without lifting the House Cup.
And that could not be tolerated.
So the schoolyard politicians got to work…
They gave out pep talks.
They doled out high-fives.
They did some brazen bribery for good behaviour involving Haribo.
And last month?
Success at last.
They finally got to put their precious ribbons on the House Cup.
And it got me thinking about success and failure….
Because failure is an odd beast.
Whether you want to win the house points, run a fast marathon, or scale to £1M+… the rules are the same.
Tolerating mediocrity guarantees failure.
Success always comes when you stop tolerating…
And start doing.
