When My Cowboy Boots Went To Downton Abbey

On Friday night someone called me vulgar.

I immediately raised an eyebrow and thought…

“Lucky you don’t read my emails, lady.”

Anyway, the vulgar thing?

Talking about money.

… At a private client’s posh Christmas party.

What I said was this.

If it’s been a good year, I buy myself a gift.

I am my own Secret Santa if you will.

Now, this year’s been a cut above the rest, so the gift is a week in the Alps.

Snowboarding.

Is this vulgar?

I dunno.

Maybe.

Probably.

Regardless, I enjoyed a woman who could be in Downton Abbey calling me out about money.

I’ll be honest, I think she was shocked I got the invite and made the list.

Probably made worse by the fact that I ignored the dress code.

Black jeans, black t-shirt and cowboy boots – that’s the same as black-tie right?

Now, I do get where she was coming from…

Pretty sure this woman has never worked a day in her life.

Never worried about expenses, wages, or making a business tick.

She doesn’t get this world in which you and I live.

Truth is, most don’t.

See when they’ve had a good year maybe they get a bonus… maybe they get piss-up… maybe they get a pat on the back.

Yet when you’re at the helm of your own ship that never happens.

Now, I suspect by the fact that you’re on this list and reading this message – you’ve worked bloody hard this year.

You’ve put it all on the line to build the business.

You’ve grafted for any success that has come your way.

And nobody has yet said “thanks” or “good job.”

You and I don’t get that luxury.

Which is a problem.

So this week I’m urging you…

Be vulgar.

Reward yourself.

Screw what the world and his wife thinks and acknowledge your success.

You’ve earned it.

Until next time.
