When the scary man offers you sweets, don’t hop in the back of his van

Yesterday I got frustrated…

See a friend had screwed up.

Fifteen months ago he hired a new employee.

…Turns out despite what he said at the interview, he’s unreliable, unskilled, and angling for a pay rise to boot.

Again.

Truth is, I warned him after he hired and fired the last special snowflake that you can try everything; bonuses, training maybe different ways of hiring – but the result is always the same.

They need too much babysitting…

The lesson?

Don’t cry about employees and then go hop back in the van for more.

It is dumb fcukery of the highest order.

And I get it…

The rules of being ‘successful’ in this game state you should have staff right?

Lots of little minions to boss around…

While you get to be the big cheese.

But the fact of the matter is, it’s only once you have been in this game a while you realise…

Employees don’t work like that.

Sure turnover may get a bump, but the number that really matters takes a big hit.

After-all, and as anyone who’s added body after body to a business will tell you…

Employees eat profit for breakfast.

… Maybe lunch and dinner too.

Meaning you end up paying for more bodies, more payroll and more ball ache – without the bump in money to back it up.

… All whilst you lose your mind trying to stay on the right side of the HR line.

Little wonder those who choose to employee up can never profitably scale.

The thing is, even if you could get free labour, on tap, that did what you asked when you asked it…

Bloat from bodies makes you slow and cumbersome.

Always.

And remember…

… As a rule and as you scale, you’d be wise to keep your business interests LEAN and agile.

It means you can turn on a dime and in the blink of an eye.
