The Hidden Cost Of Waiting To Grow Your Business

You already know the move you need to make. You’ve known it for months.

Raise the prices. Get the help. Drop the dickhead client who treats you like staff. Build the thing that finally gets you off the tools.

And still you wait. Because waiting feels safe.

It isn’t. Waiting is the most expensive thing you’ll do all year – you just don’t get the invoice until later.

The No Bullshit Version

  • The men who win don’t wait until they feel ready. They move first, and the confidence turns up afterwards.
  • Every “I’ll do it when…” is a decision to leave money on the table. The market won’t wait for you to feel sure.
  • Waiting doesn’t hold your position. It drains it – your prices, your energy, your nerve, all leaking quietly while nothing changes.
  • The life you said you wanted isn’t in the future. It’s in the garage under a dust sheet, waiting for you to actually drive it.

Barney, my 12-year-old son, is disgusted by my car.

Disgusted.

My old man Lexus (nicknamed the “sofa-on-wheels”) does not meet his standards.

To him, it is not a car, it’s a retirement home with indicators.

And the pain is made worse by our neighbours.

Where there are Mustangs, tractors, diggers, and, weirdly, a pretty sweet speedboat parked up.

Anyway, the other day we were driving home in the sofa-on-wheels, when Barney released a dramatic sigh.

Him: “Daaaaad…. why don’t youuuuuu get a cool car?”

Me: “When you make the money, you choose the car.”

He was not thrilled with this answer.

But here’s where I had an ace up my sleeve.

Because inside my motley crew, there are quite a few men who are into motors.

And one of them, Chris, owns the one car that my boy worships above all others.

The Ferrari.

Red, of course.

Now here’s what’s interesting about Chris and his Ferrari.

It is not waiting in the garage.

It is not waiting for special occasions.

It is not waiting for a Sunday drive.

Chris drives it.

He drives it down to meet the other guys and me.

He drives it on the school run.

He drives it to the Tesco big shop.

He even took my grumpy 12-year-old out for a tear around the mean streets of Lichfield, which made his week.

Not too bad for a lad from a council estate in Glasgow.

And there’s a lesson here.

Because most men do the opposite.

…They wait.

Wait until they feel ready.

Wait until they’re more confident.

Wait until the market improves.

Wait until the kids are older.

Wait until the business is less chaotic.

Wait to raise their prices.

Wait to get help.

Wait to join the room.

Wait to make the move they already know they need to make.

And while they wait?

Nothing happens.

Except time leaks away.

Opportunity disappears.

Money quietly slips out the back door.

…And the life they said they wanted sits in the garage getting rusty under a dust sheet.

Why do most business owners wait to raise their prices?

Fear dressed up as timing. They tell themselves the market isn’t ready, the clients will walk, they’ll do it next quarter. Meanwhile every month at the old price is money they’ll never get back. Nobody ever feels ready to charge more – the men who do it anyway are the ones with margin.

Is it better to wait until the business is less chaotic before making a big change?

No. The chaos is the reason to change, not the reason to wait. If you wait for calm you’ll wait forever, because a business run by one overworked man never goes quiet on its own. You fix the chaos by making the move, not by postponing it.

What does waiting actually cost a business owner?

More than the obvious. It costs the higher prices you didn’t charge, the help you didn’t hire, the leads that went cold, and the months of energy you burned standing still. None of it shows up on a P&L, which is exactly why it’s so dangerous – the bill stays invisible until you add up the years.

How do successful business owners decide when they’re ready to scale?

They don’t wait to feel ready – readiness is a feeling that turns up after you move, not before. They decide the outcome they want, then act before the doubt talks them out of it. Waiting for confidence is how the mass mediocre majority stay exactly where they are.
