Why Your Business Makes Money But You Don’t

There’s a version of you the world sees: the boss, the motor on the drive, the “doing well for himself” fella down the pub.

Then there’s the version staring at the online banking at 11pm wondering where the hell it all went.

If the gap between those two men is getting wider, read on.

The No Bullshit Version

  • Most business owners aren’t rich – they’re the last ones paid in their own business.
  • Turnover, staff and a busy diary mean nothing if the owner’s take-home doesn’t move.
  • Your business exists for one job: to make a profit for YOU – not to fund everyone else’s lifestyle.
  • You’ve done the hard bit. Now make the thing pay you back.

“When the world goes to pot, it’ll be down to greedy business owners like you!”

I hear some version of this every week from the internet do-gooders.

Which is funny because most business owners I know aren’t greedily swimming through piles of cash like Scrooge McDuck.

They’re staring at the bank account thinking:

“Where the bloody hell is all the money?”

From the outside, you’ve made it.

Customers.

Staff.

Turnover.

Nice car on the drive.

Yet somehow…

You get bigger.

But not better.

Busier.

But not richer.

More complicated.

But not more profitable.

And everyone else gets fed first.

Staff. Suppliers. HMRC. Landlord.

You get whatever crumbs survive the stampede.

…Despite taking the risk, signing the guarantees, and lying awake at 3am wondering how you’ll hold the whole bloody circus together.

Which is where the do-gooders get it dead wrong.

Your business does not exist to fund bonuses, beach holidays and staff with better work-life balance than the bloke paying for it.

The job of your business? Make a profit.

For YOU.

The owner.

For you, for your family, for your future.

It’s time to turn the business you’ve spent years building into something that makes YOU properly rich.

Because you’ve already done the hard bit.

You built the business.

Now it’s time the bloody thing started paying you back.

Before it’s too late.

Why does my business look successful but I have no money?

Because the money’s being eaten before it reaches you. Staff, suppliers, HMRC and the landlord all get fed first, and you get what’s left. Turnover going up while your take-home stands still isn’t success – it’s a queue with you at the back of it.

What is the actual purpose of a business?

To make a profit for the owner. Not to fund staff bonuses, not to give employees a better work-life balance than the man paying for it, not to keep the internet do-gooders happy. Profit for you, your family and your future. Everything else is a by-product.

Are business owners really greedy?

Most aren’t greedy – they’re skint. They take the risk, sign the personal guarantees and lie awake at 3am, while everyone on the payroll sleeps fine. The Scrooge McDuck image is a myth pushed by people who’ve never signed the front of a cheque.

Should the owner get paid first?

Yes. You took the risk, you built the thing, you carry it. Pay yourself first and force the business to run on what’s left – it’s the fastest way to find out where the waste is hiding.
