Have you heard of Pickleball?
It’s a cross between beach tennis and badminton and more fun than both.
Three weeks back I joined the local tennis club to play with Barney and Em.
Now, I’ll be honest…
… I love him to bits…
… B-U-T Barney was a shower of shit and couldn’t return a ball for love nor money.
Probably something to do with the fact that he’s never played racquet sports.
So in order to rig his game, I set him a challenge along with a carrot.
“Do 100 keepie-uppies – get 1,000 Vbucks for the Xbox… Oh and you’ve got 7 days to do it.”
It was goal-setting 101.
- Big target.
- Big reward.
- Big deadline.
Now, over the last seven days, I’ve had whining.
“Dad it’s too many!”
I’ve had moaning.
“Dad this is impossible!!”
I’ve had crying.
“Dad I can NOT do it!!!”
Yet despite all that, and credit where credit’s due – I’ve also had consistent action.
Every day he went out in the garden bouncing that ball.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
First, he got to 5, then 12, then 33….
… And then 97 – which really pissed him off because he got so close.
And then at the eleventh hour….
B-A-M.
… 157 bounces straight.
A 57% increase on the target and a stark reminder for smart ambitious men like you and I:
Small Consistent Action Always Equals BIG Results Over Time.
The keyword there being always.
Is he a Pickleball prodigy?
Not yet.
However, on the back of all this, Barney now has aced me twice and outrun me all over the court.
I fear I’ve created a monster.
Until next time.
