Right, today this might make me sound like a whacko…
… But bear with me because it’s more important now, more than ever.
Here goes.
I do not trust mainstream news.
Or social media news.
Or any news for that matter.
A view that was solidified on Thursday when Barney came home from school in a panic about the “cost of living crisis…”
… Hmmmmm – he’s 9 for fucks sake.
So, I probed.
Turns out his class had been watching Newsround for ‘topic week’ and this was the source of the mediocre mind pollution.
Now, normally no news is consumed in our home.
But to investigate further, I put it on…
Turns out Newsround ain’t like it was when we were young.
Instead, the new directive seemed to be this:
- Minimise the facts
- Maxise the emotive language.
… Backed up by a 5-minute segment aimed at putting the fear of god into our kids about the cost of living.
Recklessly pushing poverty instead of prosperity.
Seems even when it comes to kids’ news, the old media mantra for money is stronger than ever:
“If it bleeds it leads.”
No wonder so many kids feel more depressed, more down in the dumps and more dejected than ever.
It comes back to One Man Empire Iron Law #3:
“Contamination: Avoid the Weak-Willed & Weak-Minded”
… After all, what you feed your mind is everything.
It’s why I’d urge you (and your kids) to be ruthless with what you scroll… what you watch… and what you read…
… Because it matters.
The news is like a dripping tap.
Slowly soaking your brain in their messages, their fear and their agenda…
… Instead of YOURS.
So this week, time to act on your moral responsibility to protect not just your mind, but your kid’s mind too.
In my house, we’re back to no news.
